Ruud M. Buijs

Dr. Ruud M. Buijs leads the Physiology Department at I.I. Biomédicas at UNAM University and the Hypothalamic Integration Mechanisms group. His research explores the complex interactions between the brain and body, focusing on autonomic and hormonal regulation influenced by the brain’s biological clock.

Renowned for his work in internal medicine, endocrinology, and neuroscience, Dr. Buijs has significantly contributed to understanding circadian rhythms, the suprachiasmatic nucleus, and vasopressin. His studies span diverse topics such as neuropeptides, the effects of light on circadian regulation, and the role of the hypothalamus in physiological processes.

Dr. Buijs has authored highly cited works, including research on circadian rhythms in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and the impact of sleep duration on diabetes and hypertension risks. His interdisciplinary approach integrates endocrinology, neuroscience, and physiology, advancing knowledge on how biological rhythms influence health.
